Lodging in Tsukuba and Tokyo

There are many options for lodging within Tsukuba University and in the city of Tsukuba. Below we list those we recommend and provide the advantages and drawbacks of each. All the listed options consist of rooms with air-conditioning and private bathrooms. It is generally not difficult to obtain reservations to university housing or to any of the hotels in Tsukuba in August. Please indicate your lodging preference to any of the organizers as soon as possible.

Tsukuba University is very large, and it takes about 30-40 minutes to walk from Tsukuba Center to the Mathematics Institute. Thus it is recommended that you take the loop line buses, which run every 20 minutes, to the conference venue and around the university. (Here is a guide to the system for paying bus fares in Japan.) It is also possible to rent a bicycle and ride along the ample bicycle paths throughout the university and the city.

  1. University Hall

University Hall offers hotel-type accomodations about five minutes walk to the Mathematics Institute and conference venue. It offers rooms with double beds, costs a reasonable amount (about \3000 per night), but doesn't offer breakfast or internet access. It is also rather distant from Tsukuba Center and the train station (it's about a 30-40 minute walk, so taking a bus or riding a bicycle is recommended). Reservations can only be made at most two months in advance. picture 1  picture 2  picture 3
  2. University Guest House

The Guest House also offers hotel-style accomodations with single beds. It does not offer breakfast or internet access, but costs a reasonable amount (about \3000 per night) and is about a 20 minute walk from both the conference venue and Tsukuba Center.
  3. Tremont Hotel

Tremont Hotel is located about one and a half blocks from the Mathematics Institute and conference venue. The room rate varies from \8000 - \13,000 per night, and includes breakfast. There is no internet access. It is also distant (30 - 40 minutes walk) from Tsukuba Center and the train station.
  4. Okura Frontier Hotel

Okura Frontier Hotel is located right at Tsukuba Center, and is a stone's throw away from the train station. It offers breakfast and internet access, but room costs vary from \11,000-\19,000. It is distant (30-40 minutes walk) from the Mathematics Institute and conference venue.
  5. Hotel Grand Shinomone

The Hotel Grand Shinomone is located near Tsukuba Center and the train station. It offers comfortable accomodations from about \8400 for single rooms. Internet access is available.

If you wish to stay in Tokyo before or after the conference, we recommend lodging at the Toyoko Inn. There are several branches in Tokyo (the one at Ikebukuro is quite good), the rates are reasonable (less than \7000 for single occupancy), a small Japanese-style breakfast is included, and internet access is available in every room.
